MCP, Skill, Plugin, Connector
4 Terms That Get Mixed Up

All four of these come up constantly in AI circles in 2026, but people use them interchangeably in ways that don't hold up. This deck untangles what each one actually means, how they differ, and how they relate to each other.

The Plan

5 Things We'll Cover Today

01
Chapter 1

MCP (Model Context Protocol)

An open protocol that lets AI talk to external tools and data in one standard way, everywhere

What It Is

What Problem MCP Solves

How It Works

A Client–Server Architecture

MCP Host is the AI application — Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS CodeIt's the orchestrator, and it can connect to multiple servers at once
MCP Client is created on the host's side, one per serverIt maintains the connection to that specific server
MCP Server is the program that provides "context" to the clientIt can run locally on your machine or remotely in the cloud
They talk over JSON-RPC 2.0, and servers expose 3 core primitives: Tools, Resources, PromptsThe client side has its own primitives too, like sampling and elicitation
Real Examples

Common MCP Servers

🗂 Example servers

A filesystem server (reads/writes local files), the Sentry MCP server (error tracking/monitoring), Google Drive, GitHub, various databases — these are servers that any host can call into

🌐 Who supports it already

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, VS Code, and Cursor all now support MCP as a host. This is a sign that MCP has genuinely become a cross-vendor standard — not something owned by Anthropic alone anymore

02
Chapter 2

Skill (Agent Skills)

A bundle of instructions/knowledge wrapped in a folder, which Claude "reaches for" only when it's actually needed

What It Is

How a Skill Differs from Just Prompting

How It Works

The Progressive Disclosure Principle

At the start, Claude only sees the name + short description of every installed SkillUses very few tokens — no need to load full content upfront
When a task matches a Skill, Claude opens up that Skill's SKILL.md for more detailLike opening the one relevant chapter of a manual
If needed, Claude can open supporting files or run a script bundled with the Skill directlyWithout loading all that code into context
Real Examples

Commonly-Used Skills

📄 PDF Skill

A Skill for reading/editing PDFs that ships with a Python script to extract form data directly — Claude can just call that script instead of writing the code from scratch every time

🧩 A Skill Is Not a Protocol

A Skill is an application-level mechanism, not a cross-system open standard like MCP — it's how Claude (and Claude Code) manages its own extra capabilities

03
Chapter 3

Plugin (a broad term, defined differently per platform)

"Plugin" isn't a fixed standard like MCP — different platforms use this word differently

What It Is

What "Plugin" Can Mean

Cross-Platform

Same Word, Different Meaning by Context

💬 Claude (regular chat)

A Plugin = Skill + Connector + Sub-agent wrapped together, sometimes with a local MCP server attached, which runs with the same permissions as any other program on your machine — so only install from sources you trust

⌨️ Similar Concepts Elsewhere

Comparable to a VS Code extension or a Dify plugin — an "add-on that extends the core platform's capability" — though the technical details differ from system to system

04
Chapter 4

Connector (Claude Connectors)

A ready-made connection to a real app, letting Claude read and act on your data — with MCP running underneath

What It Is

How a Connector Works

Real Examples

Example Connector Usage

📧 Google Workspace

Connect Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive, then let Claude search email, manage your calendar, or edit documents without ever leaving the chat window

🏢 Team/Enterprise Level

On Team/Enterprise plans, an admin (Owner) has to enable a Connector at the account level first before individual team members can authenticate and use it themselves

Bringing It Together

Comparison Table — All 4 Terms

TermWhat it is (short)Who defines itExamplesWhen to know it
MCPAn open protocol connecting AI to tools/dataOriginated by Anthropic, now stewarded by the Agentic AI Foundation (Linux Foundation)Filesystem server, Sentry MCP serverWhen you want to understand how the "plumbing" behind connecting AI to other systems actually works
SkillA bundle of knowledge/scripts in SKILL.md that Claude invokes as neededAnthropic + users can write their ownPDF skill, the booaibootcamp-blog skillWhen you want Claude to get better at a repeated task without re-explaining it every time
PluginA package bundling several things (Skill + Connector + MCP server, etc.) installed in one shotDefined differently per platform (Claude, Claude Code, formerly ChatGPT)A Claude plugin bundling a Skill+Connector, a Claude Code plugin from a marketplaceWhen you want a ready-made capability set without configuring each piece separately
ConnectorA ready-made connection to a real app, via claude.ai's settings pageAnthropic + individual app partnersGoogle Drive, Gmail, Slack, GitHubWhen you want Claude to read/act on your real data in an app you already use every day
Relationships

What Sits on Top of What

Easy Recall

If You Only Remember One Thing

MCP = the standard wire/pipe connecting AI to the outside worldLike USB-C for AI apps
Skill = a specialized manual that Claude opens when neededNot a connection to another system — knowledge that lives inside Claude itself
Plugin = a set-box bundling several things for a one-shot installIts exact meaning shifts depending on which platform you're talking about
Connector = a ready-made plug into an app you actually useFlip it on in settings and Claude can immediately work with your data
