Chapter 1
What Claude Actually Is (Claude For Dummies)
From how Claude works under the hood, to how it differs from ChatGPT, to the ground rules for getting good answers
Fundamentals
How Claude Actually Works
- Autocomplete at massive scale — Claude predicts the next word billions of times per answer, which looks like thinking but is really pattern-matching
- Sycophancy — Claude is trained to be helpful and agreeable, so it can "nod along" instead of pushing back on a mistake. You have to stay in the driver's seat
- Tokens — the units of language Claude thinks in, roughly 500 tokens per page. A conversation that runs too long fills up the context window
Comparison
Claude vs. ChatGPT
| Where Claude wins | Where ChatGPT wins |
| Writing tone feels natural, not like a "corporate memo" | Voice mode is smoother |
| Reads long documents in one go (a 200-page PDF) | Can generate images |
| Works on files on your machine via the desktop app | Faster live search |
Automates multi-step work through Cowork | Handles more languages better |
Golden rule: both AIs get dramatically better once you pay for the premium tier
Pricing & The 3 Faces of Claude
Pick the Right Plan
Free
Browser only, limited messages, no Cowork — good if you're still deciding
Pro
$20/mo Opus model, Cowork, Claude Code, Projects — for 3+ uses a week
Max
$100–200/mo heavy use, every feature unlocked — once you keep hitting Pro's limits
Tip: pay monthly first, don't commit to annual yet — try it for 30 days before deciding
Talking to Claude Effectively
5 Rules for Writing a Prompt
Be specificInstead of "write me an email," give the context, tone, and length you actually want
Give examplesPaste something you've written and liked, say "write it like this" — Claude learns from examples faster than instructions
Say what you want, not what you don'tInstead of "don't be too formal," say "write it like a message to a coworker"
Start short, then add detailStart with a two-sentence prompt, look at the result, then refine: "make it shorter," "change the tone," "add section X"
Start a new chat when you're confusedLong conversations get cluttered and fill up context — start fresh with a quick summary of what matters. It's free and it helps a lot
Know the Boundaries
What Claude's Good At — and Not
✅ Good at
Writing first drafts / editing · summarizing long documents into one page with page-number citations · being a thinking partner to organize messy ideas · generating PPT/XLS/DOCX files via the desktop app · reading a 200-page document while keeping full context
⚠️ Not good at
Real-time information (needs Web Search enabled) · precise math · vague prompts · being trusted as 100% ground truth (it can sound confident while being wrong) · generating images (you need a different tool)
Hands-On
10 Tasks for Your First Week (examples)
- Paste 3 old posts and have Claude rewrite them in a consistent tone
- Upload a 50-page PDF and ask for a one-page summary with page-number citations
- Let
Cowork scan your Downloads folder and tell you what's there and what can go
- Paste a messy email thread and ask for 3 next actions with an owner for each
- Feed in a spreadsheet and ask it to find patterns and fill in gaps
Good habit: keep a running note of "prompts that worked" — build your own library, then turn the best ones into Skills later
02
Chapter 2
Getting Good Is Easier Than You Think (Be good at Claude is (stupidly) simple)
Climb one level at a time — from basic setup all the way to building a website with zero code
Level 1–2
Initial Setup + the One Command Worth Memorizing
Sign up at claude.aiVerify your phone number, pick a model (Opus recommended on a paid plan), set Thinking to "High"
Use the magic command AskUserQuestionType "Help me do [X] for [Y], use AskUserQuestion first" — Claude will ask 3–5 clarifying questions before starting
Ask for multiple options at onceType "give me 3 different approaches" and Claude will format them clearly, side by side
Talk instead of typingUse speech-to-text — speaking is roughly 4x faster than typing
Level 3 · Claude Cowork
Let Claude Work on Real Files
- Download the desktop app from
claude.com/download and open the Cowork tab
- Create a folder named
cowork on your desktop and drag in the files you want Claude to read
- In Cowork, click
work in a project and select that folder
- Unlike the web version, it creates real files on your machine — no copy-pasting needed
- Example: "build a spreadsheet for [X], but ask me what I need first" → wait ~3 minutes, get a ready-to-use Excel file
Level 4–5 · Connectors & Skills
Let Claude Get to Know You
🔌 Connectors
Go to the left sidebar → Customize → Connectors and link Gmail, Calendar, meeting notes — Claude gets context on your work, your schedule, and your meetings. The principle: "AI just needs context — it needs to know you"
🧩 Skills
Go to Customize → Skills, type /skill-creator, describe what you want to teach Claude, add "but ask me questions first," answer the questions, then hit Save — reuse it anytime with /skill-name
Level 6 · Building a Website with Zero Code
The Code Tab (>)
Turn on Bypass permissionsLets Claude keep working continuously instead of asking for approval at every step
Type a simple prompt"Build a page where people can book a 30-minute call with me, ask me first"
Answer whatever Claude asksThings like "do you want dark mode?" or "book through Gmail or Calendly?" — just click your answer
Get a working webpage in ~4 minutesExtend it further with "turn this into an app I can install on my phone, ask me first"
"Ask me first" is the one command that works at every level — from Chat all the way to Code— the pattern you can reuse everywhere in Claude AI Mastery
